In 1937, a small group of local sportsmen who loved the great outdoors decided to meet regularly to discuss hunting, fishing, and conservation.  At first they met in an unused garage.  But as more sportsmen joined in these meetings, it became necessary to move and one of the rooms of the Wilkinsburg Malta Temple was rented for the purpose.  It was here, principally because of the need to pay rent, that a dues charge was first made.

In 1939 the name of Crowfoot Rod and Gun Club of Wilkinsburg, PA, Inc. came into being.  The name Crowfoot was chosen by the members in honor of the wily predator.

The growing reputation of the Crowfoot Club for its work in the field of conservation caused other sportsmen wit the same beliefs to seek membership in this fast growing club to the extent that, again, a move to larger quarters was necessary.  This time in 1940, the club moved to 907 Hay Street in Wilkinsburg, where, in addition to a large meeting room that could accommodate over 400 members, there was a gameroom, kitchen, offices and an indoor range for pistol and smallbore rifles for the benefit and enjoyment of the members.  On April 21st and 22nd, 1945, a registered NRA pistol tournament was held; the first of fourteen such tournaments that helped Crowfoot to become known all over the United States.

In 1942, a 28-acre farm was purchased in Franklin Township, Westmoreland County, to provide the members with a more well-rounded program of activities.  The members now could shoot hi-power rifle and traps and train dogs.  In 1957, archery was added to the list of activities.

In the first quarter of 1970, about 100 acres of land adjoining the club's 28 acres was purchased from the Sloan Estate for $60,000.  Financing was obtained through bond sales, loans from a member, the Sloan Estate, and a commercial lending agency.  The same year, the club's name was changed to Crowfoot Rod and Gun Club, Inc.

Since 1970, the club has expanded both its membership and the number of divisions to include a fishing lake.
